Matt Painter was born in the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He went to Delta High School, where he began playing basketball under Stan Daugherty.

Matt was an Indiana University fan who hoped to play for legendary coach Bobby Knight. However, this did not happen, and he instead enrolled at Purdue University as an undergraduate.

Matt was a point guard for the Purdue Boilermakers for four seasons under coach Gene Keady. After graduating from Purdue in 1993, he went on to coach basketball after retiring as a player.

Painter initially got hired as an assistant coach at Washington & Jefferson College. While there, he contributed to the team’s success and appearance in the NCAA Division III championship.

Later, Matt was hired by Purdue University in 2004 to replace former head coach Gene Keady. He agreed to a six-year contract with the Purdue Boilermakers as their new men’s basketball coach.
