He began his singing career by competing in a talent show alongside Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins. When a local producer and songwriter, Brooke Payne, saw his group, he dubbed them “New Edition,” and Maurice Starr finally signed them to his own Streetwise Records label.
