Joan Alexandra Molinsky was born on June 8, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents, Beatrice and Meyer C. Molinsky, were Russian Jews who immigrated to the United States, and she had an older sister named Barbara Waxler. The young rivers grew up in different parts of Brooklyn. For her education she attended the Brooklyn Ethical Culture School and the Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, from which she graduated in 1950. She finished her education at Barnard College, where she studied English Literature and Anthropology. During her stay she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and graduated summa cum laude in 1954.
Rivers wanted to be an actress as a child. However, her parents preferred her to a “respectable profession” and insisted that she receive a college education. By the time she finished school, she was working 9 to 5 jobs regularly, but her true love was still calling her. At a certain point, she had no choice but to quit and focus on her acting. She took acting classes and appeared in several plays. However, her agent advised her to get into comedy as she had the talent for it. The same agent also advised her to change her name and she became Joan Rivers. She performed at various comedy clubs in Greenwich Village, a mecca for budding performers.
