Viterbi (born Andrea Giacomo Viterbi; March 9, 1935) is an American electrical engineer and businessman who co-founded Qualcomm Inc. and developed the Viterbi algorithm, which is now known as the Viterbi algorithm. The Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California, which was dedicated in his honour in 2004 as a result of his $52 million donation, is where he now holds the Presidential Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering position. 

Italian Jewish parents brought Viterbi to the United States with them as refugees in 1939 due to Italy’s racial laws. Viterbi was born in Bergamo, Italy, to parents who were also Italian Jews. After he first arrived in the United States, his given name was Andrea; but, when he became a citizen, his parents changed his name to Andrew.
